So who is Vicky? I am a 36-year-old married working mum………

Paul is my long-suffering wonderful husband who has mastered the art of raising his eyebrows and saying “yes dear” when I have anything to discuss. He is also the techy support behind Nappymania, and the person I bounce most ideas off.

Paul & I are very proud parents to Harry who is now two and we are pleased to announce the safe arrival of our second nappy-wearing person, Sam, who was born in June. Harry is enjoying his new baby brother but not really sure why he isn't a suitable playmate at the moment!

I work part-time for the NHS as a Medical Secretary, and have now been in the organisation for nearly 15 years, so I have seen many changes throughout these years and probably could bore the pants of anyone who may have time to ask!

In my “spare time”, I am an enthusiastic member of Bucks Search & Rescue, a charity who assist Thames Valley Police with missing person searches (www.bsar.org.uk). Up until recently, I used to find myself searching fields and woodland at night and in bad weather; since becoming a mother, I have stepped back slightly from the operational aspects, and have become a call out dispatcher, which enables me to be still be part of an organisation I feel passionately about.

We were very keen to use reusable nappies on Harry even before he was born, mostly because I didn’t want to waste my hard earned income on disposable nappies. I bought some terry toweling nappies from a well known high-street retailer, but I was told by my mum that they were not the same quality as the ones she had used on my brother and I some 30 years ago. Mum even offered me some terries that she had used on us, but had been keeping in case they came in useful for essential household cleaning chores. However, I set about using the terries on Harry from six-weeks-old, but the results were disappointing; whilst I eventually mastered the art of folding, they often leaked. The plastic pants left nasty marks on Harry’s legs and waist and unfortunately my husband’s attempts at origami left a lot to be desired (sorry Paul).

We persevered until a friend suggested Motherease one-size with a wrap - and we never looked back! I now use the terries for household cleaning chores! Both our mums, who regularly look after Harry, think they are revolutionary and are happy to use them too.

I am in a good routine of washing and drying every other day to ensure we always have enough.

Although real nappies may not be for everyone, I am a firm believer that all parents should give them a try, if only to save some money.
