Babeco Bamboo Nappy [Babeco-nappy]  £9.00

This super nappy is  made by Babeco, a Community Company based in Bristol that employs local people to make nappies and other baby goods. They use local labour from disadvantaged communities in inner city Bristol, creating jobs, and work experience opportunites as well as wonderful nappies and other products. They were just about the first people to start sewing nappies with Bamboo so they have lots of experience of using this fabric.

Bamboo is a very eco-friendly fabric, it has a rapid growth cycle that requires no chemicals and little water; it is naturally bacteria resistant and biodegradable. It also has a very high absorbency level compared to cotton. Bamboo fabric tends to stay relatively soft so is ideal if, like me, you live in a hard-water area. The one disadvantage that I've found with Bamboo nappies is that they do take a while to dry, certainly longer than standard cotton nappies so a tumble drier for "back-up" is handy.

The nappy itself is a nippa fastening shaped nappy. It has a bamboo terry outer and a fleece lined interior with a "pocket" opening at the front. Included in the price is a 3-layer Bamboo pad to insert in the pocket, or leave it out if you want a slimmer nappy for daytime.

This nappy has a wonderful snug fit and is especially good for tall babies. It's also quite slim between the legs so is good under clothes. It's a very thirsty nappy and one we use all the time at nights. As you would expect, it is silky-soft and feels like a little bit of luxury for your baby. The nappy comes in 3 sizes as follows:

Small    9-20lbs

Medium 18-35lbs

Large 30lbs+

Sizing is generous and this is probably not a nappy to use straight away from birth, unless you have very large babies. You can make the nappy smaller by folding the front down and nippa'ing across the tabs, and in this way economise a bit on nappy purchases.

The large size makes a very good toddler nappy. You can boost it up for nightimes, and then convert into a relatively slim fitting daytime nappy.

Due to the drying times, I wouldn't recommend a whole set of these for full-time nappying unless you have a tumble drier or were prepared to buy a few extra to cover the drying time. It is obviously more eco-friendly and better for the nappy (less wear and tear) to keep tumble drying to a minimum, so this needs to be taken into consideration.

The manufacturer recommends washing at no more than 60 degrees, using a non-bio detergent and tumble drying on "light".
